In the footsteps of Columbus

This evening, Giovanni Soldini along with two other crew members, Gabriele Olivo and Corrado Rossignoli start from La Spezia their challenge.

Soldini with a crew of 7 will attempt to break the Atlantic Ocean Cadiz-San Salvador record, the same as Christopher Columbus at the edge of the Vor 70 Maserati.
The attempt begin from Cadiz february the 1st, when the forecasts indicate a favorable weather window to the winds.
Until now the record of the 3884 miles long journey is held by a maxi trimaran. The italian yacht will try to set the new benchmark for the monohull class , which will be monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council
Soldini said "Italy lacked for almost 20 years a group and a boat to carry a crew in an ocean challenge" added "so, I wanted to realize this, which I consider a great opportunity to show abroad the valuable technology, specialization and italian spirit of adventure."
The yacht has been revolutionized over the past 6 months, the crew worked hard to lighten it, change the trim of the new keel, saving 1.4 tons in weight. Thanks to paints, freeze-dried food, no generator but engine, solar panels and 11-12 sails was possible to lighten the boat for another 1.5 tons.
"Now the boat is 100% ready to go" Soldini concludes "we hope to finish the journey in 12-13 days"
