Steve Jobs and cars

Last wednesday, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. He was a genius of our time, a man with a rare ability to fuse art and technology.I dedicate this post to him and his love and inspiration from cars.



Τη περασμένη τετάρτη, με στεναχώρησε πολύ η είδηση του θανάτου του Steve Jobs. Μία ιδιοφυία της εποχής μας, ένας άνθρωπος με μια σπάνια ικανότητα να συνδιάζει τη τέχνη με τη τεχνολογία. Αφιερώνω αυτή την ανάρτηση σε αυτόν και την αγάπη του και την έμπνευση που πήρε από τα αυτοκίνητα.

Steve’s father Paul was a machinist who fixed cars to make extra money. His son certainly has inherited his Californian love of cars.Legend has it that Steve sold his old Volkswagen Microbus to fund Apple I.


Ο πατέρας του Steve, Paul Jobs ήταν ένας μηχανικός που στον ελεύθερο χρόνο του έφτιαχνε αυτοκίνητα. Ο γιός του σίγουρα κληρονόμησε την αγάπη του για τα αυτοκίνητα. Ο μύθος θέλει τον Steve Jobs να πουλά το παλιό φορτηγάκι Volkswagen για να χρηματοδοτήσει τη παραγωγή του Apple I.

The first Macintosh computer design was influenced by a car, Porsche 928.

Ο σχεδιασμός του πρώτου υπολογιστή Macintosh επηρεάστηκε από ένα αυτοκίνητο, τη Porsche 928.

Andy Hertzfeld, a member of the Apple development team, recalls the discussion in March 1981 during a late night at the office, “It’s got to be different, different from everything else.” said Jobs to James Ferris, Apple’s director of Creative Services. “For some reason, they were talking about cars,” Hertzfeld recalls.

“We need it to have a classic look, that won’t go out of style, like the Volkswagen Beetle”, I heard Steve tell James.

“No, that’s not right.” James replied. “The lines should be voluptuous, like a Ferrari.”

“Not a Ferrari, that’s not right either”, Steve responded, apparently excited by the car comparison. “It should be more like Porsche!” referring to his Porsche 928.

“I thought it was kind of pompous to compare computers with sport cars, even metaphorically. But I was impressed with Steve’s passion for elegance in the industrial design and his powers of discrimination continually amazed me as the design took shape.” Hertzfeld said.

The design for the first Mac was released in February  1982. Jobs had worked tirelessly, attempting to produce the best Porsche-like design for the computer.

"Πρέπει να έχει κλασσική εμφάνιση, που δεν θα βγεί από τη μόδα, όπως ο σκαραβαίος." άκουσα να λέει ο Steve στον James .

"'Οχι, αυτό δεν είναι σωστό" απάντησε ο James. "Οι γραμμές πρέπει να είναι με καμπύλες, όπως μια Ferrari."     

"'Οχι Ferrari, ούτε αυτό είναι σωστό", απάντησε ο Steve, εμφανώς ενθουσιασμένος από τη σύγκριση αυτοκινήτων."Θα πρέπει να μοιάζει περισσότερο με Porsche!" αναφερόμενος στην δικιά του Porsche 928.

"Πίστευα ότι ήταν λίγο υπερβολικό να συγκρίνουμε υπολογιστές με σπορ αυτοκίνητα, ακόμα και μεταφορικά.Αλλά εντυπωσιάστηκα από το πάθος του Steve για τη κομψότητα στο βιομηχανικό σχεδιασμό και οι δυνάμεις του να τη διακρίνει συνεχώς με κατέπληξαν καθώς το σχέδιο έπερνε μορφή."είπε ο Hertzfeld

O σχεδιασμός του πρώτου Mac πήρε το πράσινο φως το φεβρουάριο του 1982. Ο Jobs δούλεψε ακούραστα, προσπαθώντας να δημιουργήσει το καλύτερο δυνατό σχέδιο που να θυμίζει Porsche για τον υπολογιστή.

Steve Jobs was rewarding Apple salespeople with brand-new Porsche 944s as an employee benefit back in 1985.


Ο Steve Jobs είχε δώσει ως benefit ολοκαίνουριες Porsche 944 στους πωλητές της Apple το 1985.

He wanted the NeXT Cube to be “the black Porsche of  computers.” (computer artist  Susan Kane viewed it more as the “Death Star of the computers”)

He also developed and ran Pixar, the animated-film company that brought us “Cars” and “Cars 2”.

Δημιούργησε και τη Pixar, την εταιρία κινουμένων σχεδίων που μας έφερε τις ταινίες "Cars" και "Cars 2".

He was always delighted in driving fast, powerful cars, he had various Porsche and Mercedes Benz models from the first Macintosh inspiring Porsche 928 to his recent Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG with no licence plate.
Steve (or someone close to him) spotted a loophole in the California vehicle laws. Anyone with a brand new car had a maximum of six months to affix the issued number plate to the vehicle. 
So Jobs made an arrangement with the leasing company; he would always change cars during the sixth month of the lease, exchanging one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for another identical one. At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months; and thus there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted.


Πάντοτε ήταν ευτυχής να οδηγεί γρήγορα, ισχυρά αυτοκίνητα, είχε διάφορα μοντέλα Porsche και Mercedes από την Porsche 928 που ενέπνευσε τον σχεδιασμό του πρώτου Macintosh ως τη πιο πρόσφατη Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG χωρίς πινακίδα κυκλοφορίας.
O Steve(η κάποιος κοντά του)ανακάλυψε μια τρύπα στη νομοθεσία του Κ.Ο.Κ. της California.Οποιοσδήποτε με ένα καινούριο αυτοκίνητο είχε έξι μήνες διορία μέχρι να τοποθετήσει πινακίδες σε ένα όχημα.
'Ετσι ο Jobs έκανε συμφωνία με μια εταιρία leasing, ώστε να αλλάζει αυτοκίνητα τον 6ο μήνα του leasing, αλλάζοντας έτσι τη μία ασημένια Mercedes SL55 AMG με μια άλλη πανομοιότυπη.'Ετσι ποτέ δε βρέθηκε με αυτοκίνητο ηλικίας 6 μηνών και έτσι δεν υπήρχε νομική ανάγκη τοποθέτησης πινακίδων.
